A canção

"North and South of the River" é uma das obras que o U2 fez a respeito do conflito na Irlanda do Norte – ou melhor, a respeito do fim desse conflito. Foi lançada pela banda pouco tempo depois que “Belfast Good Friday Agreement” foi assinado - decreto esse que causou a união do país, até então dividido politicamente.

A primeira versão lançada foi em 1996, por Christy Morre, um dos mais populares cantores folk da Irlanda. Bono e The Edge ajudaram Christy na composição e aparecem discretamente ao longo da gravação.

Voltando a falar sobre a regravação feita pelo U2: a canção é B-side de “Staring at the Sun” (Pop). Tocaram-na apenas uma vez até hoje. E foi justamente em 1998, em um programa beneficente de TV, cujo intuito era arrecadar doações para as vítimas de um bombardeio ocorrido em Omagh (o fatídico acontecimento se deu em 15 de Agosto de 1998).

Vale citar que nessa apresentação ao vivo, mudaram completamente a música, que tornou-se um acústico. Confira abaixo:
